Griffey finally hits 600th homer

June 10, 2008

He was stuck on 599 since May 31st, but a little more than a week later on June 9th, Reds outfielder Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 600th home run. He joins Sammy Sosa, Willie Mays, Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, and Barry Bonds as the six members of the exclusive 600 home run club. Griffey’s later career has been riddled with injuries and we can only wonder what could have been had he remained healthy. Griffey is only nine off of Sammy Sosa and will surpass him this season. Going any higher than fourth on the list at 38 years old however, appears unlikely.

The top six home run hitters:

  1. Barry Bonds: 762
  2. Hank Aaron: 755
  3. Babe Ruth: 714
  4. Willie Mays: 688
  5. Sammy Sosa: 609
  6. Ken Griffey Jr. 600

Regardless of his final home run count, his swing will go down as the most picturesque in baseball history. Even in his advanced age and damaged body (especially his countless hamstring injuries), he still makes hitting it out of the park look effortless.
