Fantasy update

Now that I don’t hate fantasy baseball like I used to, here’s some updates on some players.

C, OF Ryan Doumit-Pittsburgh Pirates

If you had Doumit early on this year, you were really pissed off when he went down with an injury. Hopefully, you held onto him because he was good before the injury, and has been on fire since returning on June 6. Since he came back, he is 10-29 with 4 home runs. Also, he has only struck out 4 times since June 6, and he is eligible at catcher and outfield.

P Mike Mussina-New York Yankees

Mussina is a bright spot on a Yankees pitching staff that has sucked this year. It was looking like Mussina was through but at 39, he is still a very smart pitcher. After a poor start to the 2008 season, he has gotten his ERA down to 3.82. He has always been an outstanding control pitcher so you can count on him if you need a guy to lower your BB totals and WHIP. He may still be available in some leagues so give him a look.

P Armando Galarraga-Detroit Tigers

Initially called up to replace the highest paid A-baller in baseball, Dontrelle Willis, Galarraga has earned a permanent spot in the Detroit Tigers rotation. He has a 3.31 ERA and a nice 1.03 WHIP. With the Tigers on a five game winning streak, look for Galarraga to improve upon his already strong 6-2 record.

P Brandon Morrow-Seattle Mariners

Morrow has been a great setup man and is now getting his shot at closing for Seattle with J.J. Putz on the DL with an elbow injury. Morrow can hit 100 mph with his fastball and has 25 Ks in 18 innings pitched this season. Save opportunities may not be abundant for the last place Mariners, but Morrow will strike more people out than he’ll walk.

2B/SS Alexi Casilla-Minnesota Twins

This guy doesn’t offer much in the way of power (but he does have more homers than Delmon Young) but he has gotten a hit in 23 of 25 games which puts his average at .327. He didn’t get into any games until mid-May, but he has been making an impact at the plate. He is really hot right now so bite if you need a middle infielder.

Avoid these guys:

OF Delmon Young-Minnesota Twins

Delmon Young has one home run this year and that is disappointing. His OBP is .325 is not impressive and his 22 RBI are very underwhelming. Young’s value is low right now though and he’s definitely talented so trying to snag him might not be a bad idea. Also in that boat is the very disappointing 2B Robinson Cano-New York Yankees. Batting .220 is not what anyone expected but once again, he is a superior talent who could pick it up as the season progresses.
