Edwin Encarnacion spins and wins game for Reds

After throwing an error to the catcher earlier in the game, costing two runs and completely airmailing the ball past Paul Bako, Eddie E hit a 3-run home run to end the ball game against the D-Backs. It was also in interesting fashion as Encarnacion ran up the count to 2-2 after two failed sacrifice bunt attempts. What is Dusty thinking here about “moving the runners over” and “not clogging up the basepaths” with a sac bunt in the ninth and failing to use Edwin Encarnacion’s very decent getting on-base and offensive skills? He was the team leader in BA (even if BA is not the most stat ever) for 2007 after a hot second half, and he sports an .800 OPS for his career. Also, to waste Encarnacion’s bat, when he is a known clutch player, is dumb.. although I was not expecting 3-run walkoff homer. He could have at least run up the count with a walk to give bases loaded to another good hitter in Joey Votto. I do not think anyone in the right mind should sac bunt Encarnacion in that situation. Hopefully he does not have another throwing error though, because man, although Eddie E has some really good range, for Christ’s sake he cannot throw. But by god, can he hit when he’s not in an 0-70 slump.

Sweet Redemption for Encarnacion (Cincinnati Reds)
